How many tractors did A have originally?

Contractors A, B, and C faced a shortage of tractors on a construction project, so they lent one another tractors as needed. First, A lent B and C as many tractors as each already had. A few months later, B lent A and C as many tractors as each already had. Still later, C lent A and B as many tractors as each already had. By then each contractor had 24 tractors. How many tractors did A have originally?

    work backwards.
    each contractor has 24. if lent as many as alreayd had, before this exchange, A and B each mus thave had 12, giving C 48 tractors.

    next exchange: B had to lend A 6 and C 24, so before this A had 6, C had 24, and B had 42.

    first exchange: A had to have lent B 21 and C 12. So at the beginning, B had 21, C had 12, and Contractor A had 39 tractors orgiinally

    A=B=C
    x=x=x
    4x=4x=4x=24
    x=24/4
    =6.
    this is because they each gave each other 2ce their original amount 2x so that is at the end it was 4x
